Do I need therapy?
So what sort of people seek counselling, and what are some of their reasons for doing so?
If I told you most therapists sought counselling themselves you might find that strange, puzzling, even ironic. Clinical supervision (as it’s commonly known) is actually standard practice for therapists to do their job well helping others, whilst having a space to ‘talk it out’.
Ok, so hopefully that little piece of therapist self disclosure goes someway to normalising the ‘who’.
But ‘who’ else? And ‘why’?
People put their hand up for help for a bunch of different and personal reasons - and they’re all equally super important, regardless of your age, status or gender.
Maybe there’s a difficult conversation you need help with, a workplace issue like bullying or career dissatisfaction. The fact is, everyday Joe’s seek therapy for everyday problems - their health, alcohol use, relationships, social isolation, and yes, emotional problems brought on by all those bloody lockdowns. Sound familiar?
We know that mental health (in particularly depression and anxiety) doesn’t discriminate, and why would it? We all have needs, everyday stresses and relationships that are challenging - especially right now, things seem even harder than ever.
If you struggle to talk to your friends and family about some of this stuff, you’d probably benefit from having therapy, and I hope you do - I should add it’s perfectly ok to feel uneasy and nervous about doing so, who wouldn’t be?
What now? Well as the old saying goes: “Every great journey starts with a single step. An action”.
That action might just be jumping online or picking up the phone and making that first appointment. That’s the moment you decide to get help and improve your situation, and show yourself some care too.
Truth to be told: You’ll likely feel some relief the moment you take this one important step.
